Since 1993, the pub has been run by Horace and Linda White but they're now looking to take a back seat so the reins are being handed to son Hugo, along with his brother Toby. Hugo has no plans to change the winning formula. Music to CAMRA's ears is that he feels everything stems first and foremost from the quality of the ale. The Bells has been in the Good Beer Guide for 14 years now. There are three permanent real ales, Adnams Bitter and Broadside and Greene King IPA plus two changing guests - Wood's Quaff and Bath Barnstormer on the night of the presentation. You can also get Weston's Old Rosie if you're of a cidery disposition.
The building itself is a former coaching inn with a thatched roof and low ceilings. There's a smallish public bar and a more rambling lounge which has a log fire blazing in winter. A dining room and function room complete the scene.
Food is served every session except Sunday and Monday evenings and concentrates on "good English pub grub" with local game like hare and pheasant a speciality along with home made pies (and pickled eggs).
The Bells now goes forward to the County round of the Pub of the Year competition where it is up against the Chequers Little Gransden, the Prince of Wales Feathers Castor and the Prince Albert Ely.
